US Anti-Virus Guru, 75, Dies in Jail
John McAfee, a renowned anti-virus software entrepreneur, has been found dead in his jail cell in Barcelona, Spain.
Last October, the 75-year-old American tech guru – best known for founding the McAfee computer security software company – was arrested by the Spanish authorities for deliberately failing to file tax returns between 2014 and 2018.
On Wednesday morning, 23 June, Spain’s national court approved plans to extradite McAfee to the United States. However, hours after this announcement was made, he was found dead in his cell at Brians 2 Penitentiary Centre.
Catalonia’s regional justice department released a statement after McAfee’s body was discovered: “Guards and medical staff intervened immediately to perform resuscitation measures, but doctors eventually certified his death.”
Citing suicide as a possible cause, the department added that an investigation into the entrepreneur’s death is currently underway.
Had McAfee survived or remained alive, he would have had the opportunity to appeal the court’s decision to extradite him. If found guilty of tax fraud in an American court, he would have faced up to 30 years in prison.
